The revenue management problem is cast as a semi-Markov decision problem (semi-MDP). Werbos [25] first suggested the use of policy iteration in approximate DP, and the adaptive critic essentially falls within this class of algorithms. Barto et al [1] wrote a paper that provided a stepsize-based technique for this algorithm. Recently, Konda and Borkar [15] analyzed a modified version for its convergence properties. All three of these works focus on the MDP. We combine notions from these works to solve the associated semi-MDP and prove its convergence. We provide computational evidence to demonstrate the efficacy of our method. In addition, we extend our technique to handle Markowitz risk, which should appeal to risk-sensitive airline managers seeking to avoid bankruptcy. We present an approximate dynamic programming (DP) technique, called adaptive critic, for solving an airline revenue management problem. AIRLINE STOCHASTIC CAPACITY ALLOCATION BY APPLYING REVENUE MANAGEMENT

To formulate a single-leg seat inventory control problem in an airline ticket sales system, the concept and techniques of revenue management are applied in this research. In this model, it is assumed the cabin capacity is stochastic and hence its exact size cannot be forecasted in advance, at the time of planning. There are two groups of early-reserving and late-purchasing customers demanding t...

Revenue Management Without Forecasting or Optimization: An Adaptive Algorithm for Determining Airline Seat Protection Levels

We investigate a simple adaptive approach to optimizing seat protection levels in airline revenue management systems. The approach uses only historical observations of the relative frequencies of certain seat-filling events to guide direct adjustments of the seat protection levels in accordance with the optimality conditions of Brumelle and McGill (1993). Stochastic approximation theory is used...

Semi-Markov Adaptive Critic Heuristics with Application to Airline Revenue Management

The adaptive critic heuristic has been a popular algorithm in reinforcement learning (RL) and approximate dynamic programming (ADP) alike. It is one of the first RL and ADP algorithms. RL and ADP algorithms are particularly useful for solving Markov decision processes (MDPs) that suffer from the curses of dimensionality and modeling. Many real-world problems however tend to be semi-Markov decis...

An Empirical Study of Revenue Management Practices in the Airline Industry

Revenue management has been successfully implemented in the airline industry since the deregulation in 1978. There have been very few comprehensive, rigorous studies of its practices and impact, however. In this paper we examine how revenue management practices affect airline performances such as loadfactor and revenue, and how revenue management practices are implemented in different market st...

Two-stage stochastic programming model for capacitated complete star p-hub network with different fare classes of customers

In this paper, a stochastic programming approach is applied to the airline network revenue management problem. The airline network with the arc capacitated single hub location problem based on complete–star p-hub network is considered. We try to maximize the profit of the transportation company by choosing the best hub locations and network topology, applying revenue management techniques to al...
